So we rolled in to Washington D.C. at 2:54 p.m. on Friday July 2nd. How can I be so sure of the time? I had been watching the clock like a hawk as we had 3 p.m. timed tickets to climb the Washington Monument. It was a tough balance keeping one eye on the clock and one eye on the GPS while weaving through busy DC traffic but we made it without a scratch. I have to admit, I was a little pushy at times, switching...James insists swerving in and out of lanes but hey, I'm a Boston driver at heart with a reputation to uphold! The Monument had been closed for several years post 9/11 for security purposes and then renovation work and this was our first opportunity to climb to the top. James dumped us all at the side of the road and sped off to find a place to park. The NPS Rangers let us keep jumping to the back of the line so we could wait for James. He made it - just in time for us to be able to get up and then down again and get the car before 4 o'clock to avoid having it towed. As it turned out, there was no climbing but a quick 1 minute elevator ride to the top. We had plenty of time to take in the city from 500 feet above. The views were quite impressive.
