Cave Mountain Lake VA

We arrived at Cave Mountain Lake, set up camp and had a quick swim in the not-so-inviting waters of the lake (water a little dark and looking more pond-like to me!). We made dinner as quickly as we could with night falling and did not sit down to eat until 10:15! That didn’t matter. The kids were content as was I, happily sipping on a little red wine as I prepared our Mexican casserole. But something was not quite right. At first I thought I was being picked at by some annoying little flies I had seen earlier but when James came by with a flashlight, I saw what was really happening. Several daddy long legs were coming straight towards me – over my feet and up my legs - and these spiders were either getting lots of exercise or taking steroids. It seemed the more we stomped our feet to scare them and attempted to brush them away, the faster they came after us. Suddenly, images from a Harry Potter film flashed in to my mind. Was Aragog going to come creeping out of the woods? Quite possibly so, as the caterpillars, butterflies and other crawling and flying creatures in VA are absolutely enormous! I will admit they are beautiful. The kids were a little spooked so all 4 ended up with us in our tent. Ah, cozy. It was chillier than we thought it would be. Should have put the fly on but staring up at the stars before we drifted off to sleep was quite nice….
