July 11 - Double J Ranch

The proprietor was a funny man who called James’ mother ‘granny’ the whole time we were there. Being that we were at a ranch in the middle of Kentucky, I was expecting to hear a rich southern accent on this man but ‘awl I heard was Lawng Island’. It was interesting to chat with this man who had come from NY 19 years ago to run this ranch in the south (and I told him if he ever wanted to give it up, he should give James and I a call – we wouldn’t even need to change the name!). Once we were all saddled up, we headed on a one-hour ride with our guide Benny through Mammoth Cave NP. Emmett’s horse was led by the guide’s horse so he didn’t have to handle the reigns on his own. He was a little worried at first (his horse was quite big – not the pony we were expecting) but not too long in to the ride he was waving both hands in the air (is that a good thing or a bad thing?) and having a wonderful time. Other than Abby, James and I, none had been on a horse before (including James’ mother – check that off the bucket list Deirdre!). Everyone enjoyed the ride and when we were done, we headed off on our journey towards Memphis, Tennessee.
