July 30 - Montezuma/Sedona

5,000 miles down…who knows how many more to go…. We are on our way to Lake Powell today. Picked up Steve who flew in from England just last night (our 9th and final passenger on this great American tour). At Camp Verde, we turned off for a quick visit to Montezuma Castle National Monument where we took the 1/3 mile walking tour to see the ancient 4-story cliff dwellings occupied by the Sinaguan Indians some 600 years ago. The kids managed to knock down their 7th Junior Ranger Badge while we were there. Leaving Camp Verde, we took the scenic Route 179 for a little driving tour of Sedona (to benefit Steven who had never been). Looks like they’ve had a fair bit of expansion here since our last visit 5 years ago. The views of the burnt red mountains never fail to impress. Heading north now on Lakeshore Drive with another 108 miles to go. We’re getting some fantastic lightning storms cropping up all over the horizon, to the west, north and east of us. We are hoping to be able to move quickly through to Page where we’ll be pitching the new tent at Wahweap Campground. The thermometer is reading 64 right now but by the time we reach the high desert it should rise at least 20 degrees. We are hoping to get there before dark. It’s not looking too promising….
