Met the rest of the family that had traveled up from Tucson at Navajo Bridge from which point we began our caravan along to the canyon. On the 1.5 hour drive we traveled through mountains until we reached a large plateau. From there we were treated to fantastic views as we drove along among the beautiful ponderosa pines and aspens. We saw several mule deer grazing along the meadows but no cougars (thank goodness) and we finished our ascent at about 9,000 ft. The North Rim is quite different from the South – the views of the mountains with the pines and other greens speckled throughout, the people (there aren’t nearly as many here) and the temperature! The North Rim is a few thousand feet higher than the south and the temperatures during our stay will range between 41 and 65 degrees (yes that’s 41 degrees Fahrenheit at night – time to pull out the survival blankets and get cozy with each other on the airbeds). The campsite we have is perfect – right at the rim, overlooking the canyon, and it’s just a short ride to the Lodge which has shops, a saloon and a estaurant. It’s such a treat to have the luxurious lodge to go to when you are camping. What a dichotomy! The rooms of the Lodge, which was built in the 20s are large yet cozy thanks to the dark wood and stone work. James and I treated ourselves to a 6:30 breakfast at the restaurant one morning. It was a scrumptious breakfast and the views of the canyon were spectacular. Just beyond the restaurant is a fantastic sitting room which overlooks the canyon. It is filled with oversized leather sofas and lots of Navajo rugs and decorations. There are porches either side and one evening we enjoyed some pizza from the deli. Talk about dinner with a view!
