I can see the waters of Lake Powell, shimmering like a smooth slip of grey silk, tucked in between the mountains just beyond the flat, burnt-orange soil of the desert. The walls of Glen Canyon loom large over the lake and the lightning which has been chasing us for hours now continues to burst occasionally just off to our west. The ride up was amazing with so many distinct changes in the landscape. The final push took us up a mountain and through Antelope Pass, a narrow part of Route 89A carved through the red rocks. When we reached the top, the mountains disappeared and the land opened up to a great, wide mesa. We had finished our climb to the high desert and found ourselves at 4,000 ft above sea level. Lake Powell is another one of those places I’ve been wanting to visit for as long as I can remember. I had dreamt of renting a house boat for the few days we would spend here, but James rolled his eyes at the cost and wouldn’t take the bait. Instead, we’re renting a pontoon so we can cruise through the waters, view different aspects of the canyon and enjoy a swim. We’re planning to pack the stove and have a picnic lunch on one of the sandy beaches. Can’t wait.
